The devastating effects from a hurricane can vary anywhere from property damage to a complete economic crisis. These effects on smaller communities can be extremely overwhelming due to limited resources when making the attempt to bounce back. One area affected by a recent hurricane, Hurricane Florence, is Lumberton, North Carolina. Lumberton is also home to one of GP’s cellulose mills—making recovery efforts in this area more personal.

On December 6, 2018, GP partnered with The Kids in Need Foundation’s Second Responder program to provide school supplies for 300 RB Dean Elementary school students and 60 teachers in the city of Lumberton. The event featured a giveaway presentation where students received backpacks filled with supplies, such as paper, notebooks and more. Teachers received tote bags with a variety of Georgia‐Pacific paper products, classroom supplies and Scholastic books.

This is the second major backpack giveaway that GP has sponsored this year. “Supporting education is a strong focus for Georgia-Pacific,” said Callie Kaszycki, Marketing Manager of Georgia‐Pacific’s Communication Papers division. “Paper is one of the most requested school supplies by teachers and we strive to fulfill this need, especially when disaster strikes. As the National Paper Sponsor of The Kids in Need Foundation, we are proud to help rebuild those classrooms affected by disasters such as Hurricane Florence.
