GP Educates and Encourages Employees At America Recycles Day Event

We’ve all been there: you just finished eating your take-out food and you have a foam drinking cup, paper food bag, plastic utensils and other waste in hand. You’re in a rush, so you have to make a snap decision – do you throw it all in the trash, or in the recycling bin?

Recycling anything and everything may seem like the best thing to do, but most of what people recycle ends up in a landfill due to cross contamination and improper disposal. According to Keep America Beautiful, the current U.S. recycling rate is 34 percent. While that percentage has increased over the past 30 years, at GP we believe there is always room to do better for the environment.

A lot of this recyclable waste is generated because of a lack of understanding of what we can or cannot recycle. On top of that, inconsistent labels and a patchwork of allowable materials that varies by city can make recycling a mystery.


To help decode the dilemma, GP recently hosted a “Spin it! Sort it! Sink it! Recycling Gameshow” at its Atlanta headquarters to coincide with Keep America Beautiful’s America Recycles Day. Through interactive games that included sorting everyday household items, employees learned about best recycling practices, they took the #BERECYCLED Pledge and even learned how GP is a large recycler of materials and a significant user of recycled fiber.

“We recognize that our own employees are everyday consumers too, and we all stand to benefit from better recycling know-how,” said John Mulcahy, Vice President of sustainability for GP. “That’s why we wanted to connect people with important information in a fun and meaningful way and learn more about GP’s sustainability efforts in the process.”

The event also helped educate employees on GP’s partnership with How2Recycle® and its efforts to make labels clearer for consumers. GP’s own consumer product packaging has made strides to encourage more recyclability. For example, How2Recycle® labels on our bath tissue and paper towel brands indicate that the cardboard tubes are recyclable curbside, while our plastic wrap is recyclable through store drop-off.
